Indie Writer Resources

Overall Guides and Courses

This post is part of the Publishing Resources Guide. Read more about Pre-Publication.

There are tons of courses and books out there on indie publishing. It seems like everyone has one. Here are a few that I trust to lead you in the right direction, and make the process easier along the way.

  • Let’s Get Digital by David Gaughran Amazon (affiliate link) | Barnes & Noble – An excellent overall guide to self publishing that will introduce you to every aspect of publishing you’ll need to know about.
  • Starting From Zero – a free course by David Gaughran that covers the whole self-publishing journey.
  • Self Publishing Launchpad (affiliate link) – an extensive course with everything you need to know from the moment you type THE END on your manuscript. Over thirty hours of straightforward video guides take all the guesswork out of publishing your book and getting it into the hands of new readers. This one is great if you need a lot of help with the technical aspects of publishing. It has many modules on how to use specific tools and websites.
  • Your First 10,000 Readers – This one is focused on marketing and advertising, so it’s not going to walk you through the particulars of using each publishing platform like Self Publishing 101 does. However, it will cover a lot of basics like book covers, blurbs/product descriptions, keywords and categories to make sure you’ve got everything dialed in correctly before you go on to paid advertising. So if you need a bridge between “How do I format my book?” and “I’m ready for Facebook ads,” this is your course. This one is also great if you need a lot of help with the technical aspects of publishing because it also has modules on how to use specific tools and websites. Nick offers a free starter course so you can get an idea of what he’s offering here.
